Me: Dutch, do you know how much I love you?
Dutch: Yeah.
M: How much?
D: Six pounds.
M: Oh. Okay. How much does daddy love you?
D: Three.
Cook: Only three?
M: Three what? Pounds or tons?
D: Three tons.
C: Oh.
M: Dutch, how much do you love me?
D: Six books.
M: How much do you love daddy?
D: Six pounds.

Ooh, I like quantifying love by using books. I love you 6 books...but they're all Harlequin romance novels. Or, I love you one book, but it's a John Irving behemoth.

And then there's the question of weight versus fondness. Would my beloved collected works of Jane Austen count for more than the dictionary? And what about tone? Don DeLillo versus AS Byatt?
