What is this plant? It has little orange berries. What does it want me to do with it?

And is this really a bay leaf plant? What am I supposed to do with the leaves? Can I just pick them any old time and throw them in a soup? Do I need to dry them? And wait, are they really bay leaves?

it may very well be a bay plant. we had two bay leaf plants in our yard, and the leaves looked just like that. but i lived in mortal fear of it not really being a bay plant and it being the one that looks just like a bay plant but is poisonous. the only reason i used the leaves was because the people who owned the house before us planted the trees and said they were edible bay.
i'm sure someone professional knows. or that plant book "Western Garden" by Sunset magazine can help answer the question. maybe some awesome people will eventually get around to sending you that book. maybe.

also, no idea about that orange berried one. i can't get a good enough look at it because it won't become bigger on my screen like the "bay" picture will, for whatever reason. also because i don't have any idea what the plant it.

and you can pick the bay leaves any time of the year and i don't think they have to be dried before use. should they actually be bay leaves. they make excellent christmas or whenever presents for friends and family, especially those who cook. dutch and skipper would probably love to sort them for rejects and lay them out to dry. or something.

love!

i was listening to npr the other day and thought of you. there's a website where people post pictures of plants and other organisms and other people help you figure out what it is-- this sounds perfect for you! it's inaturalist.org!
